CN's.APPLEWORKS.TIP#1
I rarely (never) use subscripts or superscripts myself.
However, Appleworks takes it for granted that I do.
9Sure they tell you in the manual that you can substitute >
<other printer codes for subscript and superscript, but they ;
9are still identified as subscript or superscript, aren't :
8they? I am sure that you are not as absent minded as I ?
=am,but I can't remember for the life of me if I have changed >
<subscript to italics or superscript to italics or subscript 3
to near-letter quality or, well you get my drift.
I decided to strike back!
;Below is how the Menu Screen looks when you reach the menu 6
to set up your printer codes for print enhancements.

;If you are interested in letting your Appleworks Disk know
who is boss, read on.
=You will need a program which can access the various sectors 6
of your disk. I use and highly recommend Copy II +.
:Boot Copy II +, and get to the Sector Editor. Oh! by the ?
=way, only use a copy of Appleworks, never the original, make !
two copies while you are at it.
7Those terms Subscript and Superscript and Boldface are 9
located on the program side in the following locations:
Appleworks V2.0 Appleworks V1.36
Track Sector Track Sector3
A 1&2 A 43
E 8 E D7
1C F 1D B,C,D3
1D 0&E 22 5
22 7
=READ these locations with Copy II + and replace the standard ?
=subscript, subscript and boldface if you wish with something >
<else, by WRITING back to your disk. You will have to enter ?
=the values in Hex (if you write the Hex values down on paper 7
before you get started things will go much smoother).
<Also, write down the word you are changing and what you are 7
changing it to so you won't make any simple mistakes:7
Boldface - NLQ (Hex - 4E 4C 51 spaces are 20s)
Subscript - Italics
Subscript - Boldface
8When all the Sectors mentioned above are changed, EVERY <
:PLACE which mentions subscript, superscript, and boldface >
<are changed. Places such as the screens you reach when you ?
=press Open-Apple O and Open-Apple ? in addition when your 8
6cursor is on one of the carats (^) you get the proper 4
desigination. Same for CONTROL-B, now NLQ for me.
<After making one or two changes boot up your Appleworks and =
;take a peek at your handy work. It might take you several 7
5trys before you get it just right, but like they say
"Nothing good is easy".
:Keep paper and pencil near by to note the particular BYTE 0
locations on each individual Track and Sector.
7Extended memory fans should have no problems with this <
modification either. Same for MacroWorks, AutoWorks, etc.
Stay tuned for further tips. Happy Apple-working.
